Project Funding: The City of Delray Beach was awarded a federally funded grant by the Transportation Planning Agency of Palm Beach County (TPA) under its Local Initiatives Program to improve Barwick Road from West Atlantic Avenue to Lake Ida Road with a focus on pedestrian and bicycle accommodation and complete streets. This is particularly important relative to the Carver Middle School in the northeast quadrant of Barwick Road and Atlantic Avenue.
The current roadway consists of two 11’ travel lanes with a swale on either side. A continuous sidewalk runs along the east side of the road throughout the project limits. The project is a Complete Streets project and is intended to improve environment for all road users, including motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and individuals with disabilities.
Scope of Work:
Project improvements include milling and resurfacing the existing roadway, drainage improvements, constructing a ten-foot shared-use path on the west side of the roadway and a 6-foot sidewalk on the east side, installation of midblock pedestrian crossing and school zone flashers, street lighting infrastructure, and irrigation.
